Ever since seeing The Palm Islands being constructed in Dubai on the Discovery Channel I am been interested in them. The Palm Islands Wikipedia Article has a lot of good information about the construction of the islands (there will eventually be three palms in total and they are also starting on making the world into islands as well) so I won’t go into that aspect. One thing that I do want to mention is that because these structures are so large, they are actually changing the coastline! (Images are clickable for larger versions)
The tourist hot-spot city of Dubai is located in United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf.
Here is Dubai a little closer. One interesting thing to note is that this particular satellite image doesn’t show the Palm Islands. This is because the Palm Islands are fairly new and had not shown up yet by the time this photograph was taken. Fortunately, when you zoom in, newer imagery is used.
This is the same image as the one at top, but with “no places” selected in the “view” menu. To help you understand how large this place is, nearly all the little dots in the “fronds” of the palm are houses… giant houses at that. This island is Palm Jumeirah, the first of the three to be built.
A bit closer we can start to see more of the houses and the “Palm Golden Mile” which, I believe, is where numerous casinos will be / are located.
This is a close-up of one of the fronds. There are all the closely packed, giant houses. The Palm’s property management has some pictures of the houses here, they are pretty amazing.
This is the second island: Palm Jebel Ali. It is slated to be completed in late 2007. The third island, Palm Deira has been pushed back due to construction issues but will be the larges of the three Palms and house some 8000 villas that start at 1.3 Million USD and go upwards of 2.7 Million USD, cold hard cash. Nice, eh?

This is awesome, I’ve never seen anything like it. It does, however, remind me of ‘Spiral Jetty’, but it’s useful.
Thanks so much for sharing this, it’s truely wonderful!

I hadn’t seen the Spiral Jetty before. It is kinda a cool piece of art (and yeah, much smaller).
Glad you enjoyed it!

Had the pleasure of driving onto the island last year. A six lane highway onto a complete city in the middle of the ocean. Unbelievable! Mega doesn’t describe it properly. It is an icon to money and egos!
